On International Migrants Day, the inspiring story of Nahily Getu highlights the transformative power of education and the role of Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas in providing pathways to success.
After fleeing war and hardship in Ethiopia, Nahily has secured a place at university to study adult nursing, a testament to her resilience and determination.
Nahily’s journey from refugee to nurse
Nahily’s life has been marked by profound hardship. In 2017, at the age of 13, she tragically lost her mother to government violence in Ethiopia. This devastating event was preceded by the disappearance of her father two years prior, who left home to work at his shop and never returned.
In 2020, amid escalating political unrest and protests, Nahily’s uncle, recognising the grave danger she faced, helped her flee the country. They sought refuge in Sudan, where Nahily was left in a refugee camp. After four agonising months, she embarked on a perilous journey to France, living in temporary accommodation in Calais before undertaking the treacherous sea crossing to the UK in 2021.
Academic journey
Despite her traumatic experiences and the daunting challenges of resettlement, Nahily demonstrated unwavering determination and a thirst for knowledge. In September 2022, she enrolled in the Level 2 Health and Social Care Extended Diploma at Cheshire College South and West. Her academic performance was nothing short of exceptional. Nahily consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, exemplary attendance, and a deep commitment to her studies. Her dedication was rewarded with A* grades in every unit and the prestigious Student of the Year award.
Building upon this solid foundation, Nahily enrolled on the AIM Access to HE Diploma (Health Professionals) in September 2023. Her passion for learning remained undiminished. She consistently impressed her tutors with her meticulous research, insightful analysis, and dedication to producing high-quality work. Nahily’s assignments were a testament to her commitment, reflecting her in-depth research, critical thinking, and ability to synthesise complex information. This unwavering dedication resulted in distinctions on all graded units.
Impact
Nahily’s academic journey has not only equipped her with the necessary knowledge and skills for higher education but has also empowered her personal growth. The Access to HE Diploma provided her with a safe and supportive learning environment where she could thrive and develop her confidence. It instilled in her a belief in her own abilities and fuelled her aspirations for a brighter future.
The culmination of Nahily’s hard work and dedication is her acceptance into her first-choice university. This marks a significant milestone in her journey towards realising her dream of becoming an adult nurse. It represents a beacon of hope, offering her the opportunity to build a fulfilling career and contribute positively to society.
“The Access to HE Diploma has been a life-changing experience for me”, said Nahily. “It provided me with the academic foundation and confidence I needed to pursue my dream of becoming an adult nurse. Despite facing immense challenges, this program empowered me to overcome obstacles and achieve academic excellence. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited to embark on the next chapter of my journey”.
Outstanding achievement
In 2024, Nahily was nominated by her college for the Outstanding Commitment to Study award in the 2023-24 Brian May Access to HE Learner Awards and went on to win the overall category trophy. She has also been nominated to represent AIM for the national Keith Fletcher Awards.
“Nahily’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of education and the resilience of the human spirit”, said Sally Finnegan, Tutor at Cheshire College South and West. “It underscores the critical role of Access to HE Diplomas in providing pathways to higher education for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those who have experienced significant adversity. By offering accessible and inclusive educational opportunities, colleges and training providers can empower individuals like Nahily to overcome challenges, achieve their academic goals, and build a brighter future”.
