Curators work within accredited museums, galleries or organisations such as local authorities, universities, historic environments and properties or trusts, with art, natural history or cultural collections which are accessible to the public. They may work with collections, built heritage, arts festivals, community-engagement projects or natural and historic environments.
The role’s broad purpose is to research, understand, develop and interpret collections, themes or subjects eg historic buildings, natural and historic environments, to make these accessible to wide ranging audiences.
The length of this apprenticeship is typically 36 months and is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding that underpins curatorship, whilst building a working understanding of the wider responsibilities within the role, such as funding and legislative requirements.
Apprentices are required to develop and implement their exhibition project and submit their written report after a maximum of 20 weeks of the project being agreed.
Given the length of the Curator apprenticeship programme, AIM is aware that there are likely to be apprentices requiring asessment on the legacy V1.0 version of this standard during the transition to the newly revised version 1.1.
AIM will continue to support assessment of V1.0 of the Curator standard moving forward. However, any new registrations will need to be made to V1.1 of this standard.
