The qualification has been designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to work professionally with a dog trained in searching for drugs and illegal substances by looking at dog training and welfare, dog handling, the proactive and the passive drug search dog and the law and ethics of working with professional drug detection dogs.

This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:

  • Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding
  • Prepare learners for employment
  • Support a role in the workplace
  • Encourage engagement in learning

This qualification has been designed to enable learners to:

  • be able to work effectively with specific dogs in different circumstances;
  • understand the training and welfare requirements of professional drug detection dogs;
  • understand and act within the law surrounding drug detection dog handling;
  • be able to provide care and training for professional drug detection dogs;
  • handling proactive drug search dogs;
  • handling passive drug search dogs.

To achieve the AIM Qualifications Level 3 Certificate in Professional Working Dog Handling – Drug Detection Dogs, learners must achieve 30 credits from the mandatory units.
