This qualification provides professional development for anyone working in a professional capacity with adults who have experienced rape, sexual violence or childhood sexual abuse. It will also be of benefit to social workers and mental health practitioners.

This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:

  • Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding
  • Prepare learners for employment
  • Support a role in the workplace
  • Encourage engagement in learning

This qualification has been designed to enable learners to:

  • Improve understanding and skills to work with adults who have been abused as children
  • Recognise the strengths and needs of individuals who have experienced sexual violence and abuse
  • Raise awareness of the effects of childhood abuse on relationships
  • Consider the effects of sexual, physical and emotional abuse
  • Provide a critical and evaluative approach to theories and concepts relating to sexual abuse
  • Discuss the issue of confrontation and legal action
  • Consider a variety of approaches to helping the healing process
