There are no formal entry requirements for students applying for the AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group Access to H.E. Diplomas. Centres adopting the Diploma are, nevertheless, required to ensure that learners admitted onto the Diploma possess the necessary skills and personal qualities to cope with the demands of the course. The AVA expects centres to establish that candidates normally operate to at least Level Two in English and Level One in Mathematics before being accepted onto a course leading to the Diploma. In addition, centres would be expected to provide advice and guidance about the demands of the course and to establish that applicants show appropriate levels of commitment and motivation.
Centres are encouraged to consider using a variety of assessment methods in order to prepare the learner for study at a higher level in their relevant subject area. These include essay writing, presentations, practical, academic displays, discussions, reflection, role play, research projects and field work.
The Access to HE Diploma (Science) aims to develop student’s knowledge and skills in a range of different science professions. Students will develop their understanding of the key scientific principles and learn how to conduct scientific experiments. During this Diploma students will explore different applications of science and enhance their problem solving skills through a variety of different assessments whilst developing their subject knowledge.
It also provides students with the opportunity to look at different areas of science, including biology, chemistry and physics, as well as computing and mathematics. Students will also be required to complete a practical assessment unit as part of this Diploma. Throughout the Diploma, students will also develop transferable skills such as problem solving, working with others, interpreting information and numeracy.
The aim of this qualification is to prepare students for progression into higher education subjects including, but not limited to:
Upon successful completion of this Diploma, students will be able to:
1. outline key scientific principles
2. understand how to conduct a scientific experiment
3. demonstrate the ability to use maths for science
4. approach the different specialisms within science with confidence
5. develop core research, referencing and study skills for success in HE
The qualification prepares students for study at higher education level.
