This qualification has been developed to give learners a broad overview of the topics that they may come across in zoos, from the development of zoos to how keepers provide day-to-day care for the animals, using effective record keeping and communication skills.

Learners will develop knowledge of enrichment and training in zoos, alongside the management of animals in a zoo. They will also develop an understanding of the value of the media to zoos and the role of the zookeeper in relation to the media. This qualification also provides learners with the opportunity to develop skills in presentation and zoo design.

This qualification can be used to enable learners to gain the knowledge to obtain employment in zoos, wildlife parks and safari parks. It will also enable progression to further study within this subject area.

To achieve the AIM Qualifications Level 3 Diploma in Zookeeping learners must achieve:

  • 37 credits from the nine Mandatory Units
  • No optional units for this qualification

Quality Assurance Requirements

Tutors:

To offer this qualification, centres must ensure that tutors hold or are working towards:

  • A Level 3 qualification in teaching in the area of zookeeping or equivalent experience.
  • A UK recognised teaching and/or assessing qualification.
  • At least a year?s meaningful experience in working within the subject area of Zoos/Zookeeping.

Internal Quality Assurer (IQA):

Centres must also ensure that they have in place an Internal Quality Assurance person who:

  • Holds or is working towards a Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices or its equivalent.
  • Has substantial, documented experience of working in or assessing qualifications in working in zoos.
  • Is familiar with the assessment requirements of the qualification for which they are the Internal Quality Assurer.
