This qualification offers learners the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skills to look after small animals. They will gain knowledge of first aid that is applied to animals and the welfare needs of animals. Small animals refers to domestic animals such as: dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, and similar sized animals.

This qualification can be used by those wishing to progress to more specialised work with animals, e.g. dog handlers, dog groomers, pet sitters, etc.

To achieve the AIM Qualifications Level 3 Award in Small Animal Care and Welfare learners must achieve:

  • the 3 credits from the two Mandatory Units
  • no optional units within this qualification

Quality Assurance Requirements

Tutors:

To offer this qualification, centres must ensure that tutors hold or are working towards:

  • A Level 3 qualification in teaching in the area of animal care or equivalent experience.
  • A UK recognised teaching and/or assessing qualification.
  • At least a year?s meaningful experience in working within the subject area of animal care.

Internal Quality Assurer (IQA):

Centres must also ensure that they have in place an Internal Quality Assurance person who:

  • Holds or is working towards a Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices or its equivalent.
  • Has substantial experience of working in or assessing qualifications in the animal care sector.
  • Is familiar with the assessment requirements of the qualification for which they are the Internal Quality Assurer.
