VFX: Junior 2D Artist EPA

The Junior 2D Artist EPA is the end-point assessment for this level 4 standard.

Visual effects (VFX) is the term used to describe any imagery created, altered or enhanced foImage of film camerar moving media. They involve the integration of live-action footage and computer-generated imagery to create images which look realistic but will be dangerous, costly, or simply impossible to capture during live-action shooting.

Junior 2D artists are responsible for assisting the senior visual effects artist by preparing elements for use in the final VFX shot. Junior 2D artists utilise artistic knowledge in areas such as composition and colour in addition to accepted industry standard compositing software and operating systems. They are expected to work within a team and to be good communicators and problem solvers.

Gateway requirements

  • completion of a portfolio, that the apprentice can use to support the professional discussion
  • level 2 English and maths

Assessment methods

  • Portfolio – submitted to AIM once the apprentice has gone through the gateway
  • Knowledge test - a two-hour exam covering underpinning knowledge to be held at the training provider or employer premises, invigilated by AIM
  • Synoptic activity – a six-hour test of technical skills. To be held on the training provider or employer’s premises, invigilated by AIM
  • Professional discussion – a 45-minute session with our assessor. To be held at the training provider on employer’s premises or via Skype

Indicative duration of assessment

Usually completed within four weeks of gateway (subject to availability of facilities and assessor).
