The qualification focuses on study skills, literacy and numeracy and personal development and includes optional units that offer learners a taste of subject areas in science and engineering that they may go on to study
This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:
- Prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding
- Prepare learners for employment
- Support a role in the workplace
- Encourage engagement in learning
Learners who achieve an AIM Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Further Study in Science and Engineering, will be able to progress to Level 3 courses, for example, Access to Higher Education Diplomas in science, engineering or land based studies.

To be awarded the AIM Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Further Study in Health, learners must achieve:
- ?25 credits
- A minimum of 15 credits must be achieved from Mandatory Group M
- The remaining 10 credits may be achieved from any combination of units in optional groups A and B
