The AIM Qualifications Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment provides a foundation in health and safety for individuals working or intending to work in the construction industry. The qualification covers: improving health and safety at work, safe operation of equipment, risk assessment, working at height and manual handling.
This qualification can be used flexibly to meet learner needs. Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:
- prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding;
- prepare learners for employment;
- support a role in the workplace;
- enable learners to work on a building and construction site.
This qualification has been designed to enable learners to:
- understand risk assessments and hazards;
- be able to carry out accident reporting procedures;
- understand procedures for safe manual handling;
- list the hazards associated with working at height;
- understand the main risks to health on a construction site.

To be awarded the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, learners must achieve:
- 3 credits by completing the mandatory unit within this qualification.

The assessment method for this qualification will be changing to fit with the requirements from CiTB. The specification will remain the same but the assessment for this qualification will be an onscreen test from 01/09/22. This is more flexible than paper-based assessments. There will be no requirement for learners to create a portfolio for this qualification. The assessment will be marked externally.?

Tutors:
To offer this qualification, centres must ensure that tutors hold or are working towards:
- A teaching qualification, qualifications and experience of building and maintenance work.
Internal Quality Assurer (IQA):
Centres must also ensure that they have in place an Internal Quality Assurance person who:
- Holds or is working towards a Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices or its equivalent.
- Has substantial experience of working in or assessing qualifications in the building and maintenance area.
- Is familiar with the assessment requirements of the qualification for which they are the Internal Quality Assurer.
