Learning Disability Week 2022

Learning Disability Week is a time for people living with a learning disability to share their story on what it’s like living with a learning disability, how it effects their lives, and to celebrate their incredible achievements; being a prime example of not letting your disability define who you are or your limitations.

The theme for this year is living life with a learning disability with the leading protagonist for #LDWeek22, MENCAP, wanting to show how people with a learning disability are reconnecting with friends and their communities and how many people are still living with issues brought on by COVID like isolating or dealing with poor mental health and anxiety.

The Stats

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows more work needs to be done to make it easier for people with disabilities to access qualifications and learning to help them with day to day living or to improve their circumstances.

  • The proportion of disabled people who had no qualifications was more than two and a half times the proportion of non-disabled people, at 16.1% compared with 6.0% in 2019.
  • 21.8% of disabled people had a degree in 2019 compared with 38.0% of non-disabled people; this gap has remained consistent over the period 2013 to 2019.
  • Disabled people aged 60 to 64 years were almost two and a half times more likely to have no qualifications than non-disabled people, 24.1% compared with 10.4%, respectively.

How AIM can help

AIM has a number of qualifications designed to build the confidence and self-esteem, which are available to any training centre or college that is a recognised AIM centre.

Independent Living qualifications
These AIM qualifications are designed to address the needs of entry level learners particularly, those with learning difficulties and disabilities. These qualifications provide a basis for lifelong learning focusing on transferable social and life skills which are essential for living and working in the community.  The qualifications have been developed in collaboration with providers of education for learners with a wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities as well as professionals working in the field. They recognise the benefit of acknowledging and celebrating the real achievements of those learners in areas that have often been neglected.

Personal and Social Development Skills
These Level 1 to Level 3 qualifications support adults to become confident individuals who are physically, emotionally and socially healthy, be responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society, and embrace change and manage risk and well-being. They offer credit-based accumulation and transferable components across the different sizes of qualifications and there are a wide range of assessment methods available to suit the individual learner.

The AIM Qualifications Suite of Employability Skills are designed to build the confidence and self-esteem of learners. They encourage the development of values, personal attributes and interpersonal skills that contribute to success in the workplace. This suite of qualifications aim to cultivate positive attitudes to work, with the development of essential work skills and behaviours such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Successful learners are empowered to apply for, secure and sustain meaningful employment. Literacy, numeracy and ICT components are available.
