Operations Manager EPA

The Operations Manager EPA is the end-point assessment for this Level 5 standard.

The broad purpose of this occupation is to provide leadership, with both operational and project responsibilities. An operations manager is responsible for managing individuals or a team, offering direction, instructions, and guidance to achieve set goals within an organisation.

This typically involves setting, managing, and monitoring the achievement of core objectives aligned with the organisation’s overall strategic goals. In smaller organisations, they are also likely to contribute to the execution and achievement of these strategic objectives.

Operations managers understand how their role supports the broader organisational structure. They apply codes of practice, legislation, and regulations relevant to their organisation’s operations. This encompasses legal and ethical responsibilities, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, and the sustainability impacts of the organisation.

Gateway requirements

  • Level 2 English and maths*
  • A portfolio of work-based evidence, used to support the Professional discussion
  • A completed on-programme project, which will form the basis of the Project with report EPA

*this only applies to apprentices aged 16-18 at the start of their apprenticeship training. For apprentices aged 19+ at the start of their apprenticeship training, achieving L2 English and maths is not mandatory.

Assessment Methods

  • Project with report: A 4,000 word written project report based on a project, completed pre-Gateway, that has a real business application and benefit. This is followed by a presentation delivered by the apprentice, and then questions from an assessor.
  • Professional discussion, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence: A 60-minute discussion with an assessor, supported by a portfolio of evidence.

Indicative duration of assessment

  • The EPA will typically be completed within a period of up to five months once the Gateway requirements have been met.
