Camera Prep Technician EPA

The Camera Prep Technician EPA is the end-point assessment for this level 3 standard.

Camera prep technicians are typically found in the media rental industry where hire companies supply cameras for film, TV, music promos, commercials, virals and other productions, often for businesses operating a fleet of demonstration and loan equipment. The production stage for which cameras are hired is the first step in the making of a film or television production.

Technicians prepare and ensure that camera equipment is complete, works effectively, is correctly maintained and is appropriately configured and accessorised to be suitable for a given production or purpose. They interact with colleagues and senior technical managers on the camera floor or warehouse, preparing equipment either individually or in teams. They will need to provide technical advice and updates on progress to clients and rental desk colleagues. They liaise with clients and couriers and drivers when dispatching and receiving equipment. They may also provide technical support during pre-production camera tests to production crews from the organisation borrowing the equipment. They are responsible for preparing packages of very expensive and highly complex and specialised equipment with an attention to detail that is crucial for ensuring that a production doesn’t encounter costly technical issues which could have been avoided during the prep stage.

They provide technical advice and technical support about compatibility and use of equipment to camera crews and are also are also responsible for identifying and replacing/substituting components that do not meet specific technical standards or requirements.

Typically, they report to senior technical managers but work autonomously and with integrity.

Gateway requirements

• Completion of a work log
• Level 2 English and maths

Assessment Methods

• Multiple choice test
• Observations with questions: Our assessor will observe the apprentice building and dismantling a kit over a period of three hours. During this time, the assessor will be asking questions.
• Professional discussion underpinned by a work log: A 90-minute professional discussion with our assessor, during which the apprentice will be expected to refer to their work log to exemplify their responses to questions.

Indicative duration of assessment

The EPA will typically be completed within three months once the gateway requirements have been met.
